That's because even though engineers have found ways to keep making processors faster, they're running up against physical problems with making circuits smaller. Namely, it seems that as clock speeds on these processors get faster, they're drawing a disproportionately high level of power. This is clearly unacceptable in an era of increasing concern about energy efficiency and as more and more devices that use these chips are powered by batteries that need to provide power to the devices as long as possible.

Now many chip makers are taking a new approach by having several processors built into the same machine and running in parallel. This can already be seen in many commercial PC's that have dual core processors and the newest Play Station Game Console has nine separate processors. It seems that by dividing the work load up among several processors, machines can attain high clock speeds while actually consuming less energy. It also allows machines to have several different processors that are devoted to specific tasks like graphics, and therefore providing a much smoother experience for the users.

Using multiple processors all in the same machine does present so problems from a programming standpoint, but it also promises to provide a faster and more streamlined experience for machine users everywhere.
